1.Sankyo Soko Rice Storehouses –

Step back in time as you visit the Sankyo Soko Rice Storehouses, a historic symbol of Sakata’s once-flourishing rice trade. Built in 1893, these iconic black-and-white storehouses were used to store rice harvested from the fertile Shonai Plain. Surrounded by a row of 150-year-old zelkova trees, the warehouses are not only functional but also picturesque, offering a glimpse into Japan's traditional architectural style. Today, one of the storehouses has been transformed into a museum where visitors can learn about Sakata’s economic history and the role rice played in shaping the region’s identity. The area also features a local market with unique souvenirs and traditional treats.

2.Honma Museum of Art & Former Honma Residence –

Discover the splendor of the Honma family, one of Japan’s wealthiest merchant clans, at the Honma Museum of Art and their Former Residence. The museum, housed in a traditional Japanese building, showcases an impressive collection of artworks, ceramics, and antiques that reflect the refined taste and cultural contributions of the Honma family. Adjacent to the museum is the Former Honma Residence, a beautifully preserved Edo-period mansion that offers a glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of this influential family. Wander through the meticulously maintained Japanese gardens and experience the timeless elegance of traditional Japanese architecture.

3.Hiyoriyama Park –

Take a moment to relax in the serene Hiyoriyama Park, perched on a hill overlooking the Mogami River and the Sea of Japan. This peaceful park is famous for its seasonal beauty, particularly during cherry blossom season when the trees are in full bloom. Among its highlights is Japan’s oldest wooden lighthouse, which once guided ships safely into Sakata’s port during the Edo period. The park also features traditional stone lanterns, a replica of a Sengoku-period ship, and walking paths that offer stunning panoramic views of the surrounding area.

・4.Juroku Rakan Iwa –

Marvel at the Juroku Rakan Iwa, a series of 22 intricately carved stone statues of Buddhist disciples, or "rakan," set against the dramatic backdrop of the Sea of Japan. These unique carvings, completed in 1864, were created by local monks to protect fishermen from the dangers of the sea. The rugged coastline and the powerful waves crashing against the rocks create a dramatic and meditative atmosphere, making this site a spiritual and scenic highlight of your journey.

5. Sakata Seafood Market –

End your tour with a feast for the senses at the Sakata Seafood Market. This bustling market offers a wide variety of fresh seafood sourced directly from the Sea of Japan. Sample local specialties such as grilled squid, sashimi, or crab, and mingle with local fishmongers as they showcase their daily catch. The market also features a selection of regional produce and handcrafted souvenirs, making it a perfect spot to pick up a taste of Sakata to take home with you.
